State-run companies produce over 25 million tons of iron ore in Iran

Iran's eight major state-run iron ore producing companies have produced about 25.7 million metric tons of processed iron ore in the first nine months of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 21-Dec. 22, 2014).

The companies extracted 39.2 million metric tons of iron ore during the 9-month period, the Islamic Republic's Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) reported Jan. 12.

Chadormalou ranked first among the companies producing 9 million metric tons of iron ore followed by Gol Gohar with 7.5 million metric tons of production.

Markazi(3.9 million metric tons), Sangan(2.2 million metric tons), Sirjan(over one million metric tons) Jalalabad(978,000 metric tons), Mishdavan(597,000 metric tons), and the Central Plateau(316,000 metric tons) were other state-run iron ore producers.

The report does not include the volume of produced iron ore by private sector companies, which in total produce 14 million metric tons of iron ore annually.

Iran's iron ore exports witnessed a significant fall during recent months. Tehran exported 7.75 million metric tons of iron ore, worth $510 million during the 7-month period from March 21 to Oct. 22, 2014, which indicates a fall by 34.84 percent in terms of volume and a decline by 31.23 in terms of value respectively compared to the same period of the preceding year (Iran's fiscal year starts on March 21).

The Islamic Republic exported around 20 million metric tons of iron ore in the previous Iranian fiscal year, which ended March 20, 2014.

Iran's iron ore reserve stands at 5.1 billion metric tons, of which 2.8 billion metric tons are proven.
