Iran produced 15.6 million metric tons of petrochemical products in the first 4 months of the current Iranian fiscal year, which started on March 21, National Iranian Petrochemical Company's production manager Ali Mohammad Bassaqzadeh said.

The country's petrochemical production rose by 4 percent compared to the same period in the last year, Iran's Shana news agency quoted Bassaqzadeh as saying Aug. 1.

Petrochemical production in Pars Special Energy and Economic Zone rose by 8 percent year on year, he said, adding that production in Mahshahr and other parts of the country rose 2 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

Iran's petrochemical output hit 44 million metric tons in the past Iranian fiscal year, and the figure is projected to rise to 51 million metric tons in the current year.

The country's actual production capacity is around 60 million metric tons, but the shortage of natural gas as feedstock, old production units, and the problem of sanctions, which has dropped exports, have caused petrochemical complexes to work at lower capacities.
