The import of steel products to Iran in the first four months of the current Iranian fiscal year (since March 21) reached 500 thousand metric tons, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Steel Producers Association Hamidreza Taheri Zadeh said.

The import of steel products to Iran during the previous Iranian calendar year (which ended March 20) hit two million metric tons, IRNA news agency reported August 19.

Taheri Zadeh said Iran has to import steel foils from 2.8 to 40 millimeters in thickness since they are not produced in the country.

He further said last year Iran exported 2.5 million metric tons of steel.

A report by the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade said last year Iran's crude steel output grew by 7 percent compared to the preceding year to hit 16.6 million metric tons

During the same period Iran's steel products output grew by two percent to hit 16.9 million metric tons.

Iran plans to produce 18 million metric tons of crude steel by the end of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 20) and to produce 19 million metric tons of steel products in the meantime.
