Transit of goods via Iran hits 5.25M tons

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Over 5.25 million metric tons of goods were transited through Iran in the first five months of the current calendar year (March 21-August 22).

Iranian Roads Maintenance Organization director Mohammad Javad Atrchian said about 2.613 million metric tons of transited goods were oil products and 2.642 million metric tons were non-oil products, IRNA news agency reported on August 31.

The volume of transited goods did not change compared to the same period in the past year.

The transited consignments mostly consisted of fuel, construction materials, cotton, home appliances, vehicles, foodstuff and fertilizers.

Iraq, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates were the main sources of transit, while the United Arab Emirates and Turkmenistan were the main destinations.

Over 12.084 million metric tons of goods were transited through Iran in the previous Iranian fiscal year, which ended on March 20).

The amount shows 4 percent increase compared to last year.

Some 96 percent of the mentioned amount (11.59 million metric tons) was transited via roads and the other 4 percent (494,000 metric tons) by railways.
