Number of Iran's active internet domains increases by 750%

Number of Iran's active domestic domains stands at 754, 637, which indicates a rise by 22 percent on yearly basis, Iran's Mehr news agency reported Feb. 23.

The figure was 618,789 by the end of last Iranian fiscal year (ended March 2015).

The ir. domain ranks first among the domains registered by Iranian users, meanwhile .net stands at the bottom of the list.

The .ir is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Iran. It is managed by the Institute for Studies in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics located in capital city of Tehran.

Over 745,922 active .ir domains are registered in the country.

Iran's domestic domains also include: .co.ir(3,697 domains), .iran(2,109 domains), ac.ir(1,520), sch.ir(355), gov.ir(289), org.ir(312) and id.ir(391) .

Iran ranks first in the region with the number of active domestic Internet domains, according to the report.

The country also has surpassed countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Slovakia, Greece, and Finland in terms of number of domestic internet domains.

The Islamic Republic is among the top four countries in the world with highest annual domestic internet domain growth rate of 45 percent.

Almost 50,000 domestic domains were registered in the country by March 2012. The figure increased to 100,000 by March 2013, and hiked to 400,000 by March 2014.

The number of domestic Internet domains surpassed 600,000 by March 2015.
