Italian company Finergy will construct three solar power plants in Iran.

During a visit to Tehran, the company's representatives discussed investment in Iran's renewable energy sector with the Islamic Republic's energy ministry officials, Tasnim news agency reported Feb. 23.

The two sides agreed about building solar power plants in Iran's Kerman, Yazd and Shiraz cities with a total capacity of 10 megawatt (MW) of electricity.

The three plants will be constructed using Finergy's funds.

Last February, Homayoun Haeri, the managing director of Iran Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR), said ten percent of Iran's electricity needs will be met by solar and wind power plants by 2022.

He added that Iranian solar and wind power plants will generate 12,000 MW of electricity annually.

Iran's power generation capacity currently stands at around 74,000 MW, of that some 12,000 MW accounts for hydroelectric power plants, 1000 MW for a nuclear power plant and the remaining for thermal power plants.

According to a recent annual report, Iran's capacity of producing renewable energy stands at 232 megawatts, 0.31 percent of the country's total power generation capacity.

Iranians consumed about 219 billion kilowatt hour of power between March 2014 and March 2015.
