By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

More than 60 percent of Iranian laborers work in two jobs due to low salaries, said Gholamreza Abbasi, the secretary-general of the Supreme Labor Council, ISNA news agency reported May 10.

Iranian laborers have no choice but working in second and even third jobs to fill the gap between the minimum wage and the costs, Abbasi said.

The monthly minimum wage in Iran is 8,120,000 rials, while the monthly average household expenditure is 33,000,000 rials ($1 is equal to 30,350 rials), he said.

Laborers account for 40 percent of Iran's population, added Abbasi.

Aside from the low wages, the workers' community is in constant turmoil due to the prevalence of temporary contracts.

The data released by the Iranian Statistical Center on April 6 suggest that the unemployment rate for men over the last Iranian calendar year (ended March 20) was 9.3 percent and the figure for women was 19.4 percent.

The statistics has revealed that the country's economically active population (employed, unemployed) is over 24.701 million people, while over 2.7 million out of the total number are unemployed.

According to the Statistical Center, 32.5 percent of the country's workers were employed in the agriculture sector, while 49.4 were employed in the industry and services sectors.
