Iran and Turkey are considering a plan to launch an electricity market in the region.

Iran and Turkey have launched a new round of talks discussing a plan for launching a regional electricity market with the participation of the members of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Mehr news agency reported.

The annual report of Iran's Energy Ministry has said that the country exported 10 billion kilowatt-hour of electricity in a time period of March 2013- 2014 of which 23 percent was supplied to Turkey.

Iran currently swaps electricity with all neighboring countries including Iraq, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to its website, ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the Member States.

In 1992, the Organization was expanded to include seven new members, namely: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan.
