Concerns grow in Iran over fatal animal disease

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has killed some 16,000 livestock over the past two months in Iran.

The highly communicable viral disease has killed about 16,400 livestock over the first two months of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20), Tasnim news agency reported.

According to the report, the country has also lost about 15,000 livestock due to the same reason over the last Iranian calendar year.

According to the report about 13,000 sheep and goats, 1,800 cows died due to the illness over the last year.

The report further criticized the Iranian veterinary organization and government over their failure to control the diseases.
