The volume of Iranian government's guaranteed purchase of wheat from local farmers has surpassed two million tons, an Iranian official said.

The head of the Government Trading Company (GTC), Ali Qanbari, has said that the guaranteed purchase of wheat is currently taking place in 15 provinces, Fars news agency reported.

Ali Qanbari added that the volume of the government's purchased wheat has increased by 500,000 tons indicating 25 percent growth.

The Iranian government bought more than eight million tons of wheat from local farmers in the crop season of the last Iranian calendar year (started March 20).

Iranian media last year reported that the government imposed import duties on wheat and barley to protect local farmers from cheap imports and to prevent imported grain being re-sold to the government at higher prices.
