Iran is considering transit discounts ranging between 30 and 55 percent for Chabahar Free Zone as a bid to precipitate the activation of the area.
Announcing the news, Iran Ports and Shipping Organization CEO Mohammad Saidnejad said the decision follows a trilateral agreement between Iran, India, and Afghanistan to use the zone as a transit hub, IRNA news agency reported May 28.
He explained that the agreement states India will use Chabahar for transferring goods to/from Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is surrounded by land. Chabahar provides the nearest access to international waters for Afghanistan.
Chabahar is situated in southeastern Iran by the Gulf of Oman. India recently said it is willing to invest $500 million in the area.
