By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

China will participate in construction of Iran’s first coal-fired power plant, Alireza Nasrollahi, an official with Iran’s energy ministry, said.

The power plant will be manufactured in Tabas, central Iran with finance of Iran’s Export Development Bank, Nasrollahi said, IRNA news agency reported.

He added that a consortium of Iran’s MAPNA Group and Shanghai Electric, a Chinese multinational electricity equipment manufacturing company, will develop the project.

MAPNA Group is a conglomerate of Iranian companies involved in development and execution of thermal and renewable power, oil and gas, railway transportation and other industrial projects.

Nasrollahi said that the 650-megawatts power plant will receive its feedstock from the Mazino coal mine near Tabas city.

However he did not explain why Iran wanted coal-fired plant, as coal is significantly greater pollutant than either oil or gas, which Iran has in vast quantities.

Nasrollahi said that the project was started in 2008, however it was not completed due to the ban on opening Letters of Credit (LCs) due to sanctions.

Having had a 25 percent progress, the project would require 30,000 billion rials ($930 million) in total to be completed.
