Over 12,000 kilometers of new roads are under construction in Iran, according to CEO of Iran’s Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company Kheirollah Khademi.

Currently, some 3,500 kilometers of new railways are being constructed, which is equal to 40 percent of all operational railroads that now exist in Iran, Khademi told Trend.

Also, he added, 1,350 kilometers of freeway are under construction, which is equal to 50 percent of the currently operational freeways in the country.

According to Khademi, some 7,500 kilometers of highways and main roads are also under construction in Iran, which is equal to 50 percent of the currently operational highways and main roads in the country.

The official further said Iran has recently started building a high-speed railway that will connect Tehran to Qom and Isfahan.

Regarding the Tehran-Astara railroad, he said the Qazvin-Rasht part of the project will be complete by around May next year.

“After that we will start the Rasht-Astara section in a bid to connect Iran via railroad to Azerbaijan, Caucasus and Europe,” he noted.

“Two new rails are also being laid along the present Tabriz-Mianeh railroad. This will bring about a great change to East Azerbaijan Province and also provide good connection route to the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Mianeh-Bostanabad part will be complete in the first half of 2017 and will be connected to Tabriz during the next government administration, providing transit and passenger transportation from Iran to Europe,” Khademi said.
