Iran, Germany, Austria to make fuel-efficient cars

Iran jointly with Germany and Austria will manufacture a fuel-efficient car, Iran’s minister of Industry, Mines, and Trade, Mohammad-Reza Nematzadeh, said.

Two Iranian leading car manufacturer companies-Saipa and Iran Khodro are working with German and Austrian counterparts to manufacture the three-cylinder car, Nematzadeh said, Iran’s state-run IRINN TV reported Jan. 17.

He said that the car which will be supplied to the market in the near future enjoys an engine with power output of 160 HP (Horsepower) and fuel consumption of 5 litres per 100 kilometers.

In August 2016, Iran’s leading car manufacturer Iran Khodro and the German automotive parts manufacturer MAHLE GmbH signed a deal for jointly design and manufacturing of three-cylinder car engine within 30 months.

Almost 350,000 engines with power output of 120-160 HP (Horsepower) and fuel consumption of 4.7 litres per 100 kilometers which correspond to the Euro 6 standards will be produced per year in Iran, under the deal.

Some 946,533 cars were produced in Iran in the first nine months of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 20-Dec. 21, 2016), 38.7 percent more year-on-year.

Iran’s car output reached 982,337 units in 2015, according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA). The figure indicated a 9.9-percent fall year-on-year.

The Islamic Republic manufactured 884,866 sedans and 97,471 commercial vehicles in 2015.

According to the country’s economic development plan, Iranian carmakers are expected to produce three million cars per year by 2025.
