Iran is able to supply 4 percent of the world’s zinc market, said Minister of Industry, Mine, and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh.

He made the remarks in a meeting to sign a contract over the development of Mahdiabad lead and zinc mine in Yazd, central Iran, which holds about 200 million tons of the two metals, IRNA news agency reported March 11.

The global product of zinc is 14 million tons per year. The latest reports say that Iran’s output is 40-50,000 tons a year.

The Mahdiabad mine is estimated to need an investment of $1 billion. Adjacent to the mine, a zinc concentrate unit of an 800,000-ton capacity is going to be constructed.
