By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Iran has inaugurated its largest solar power plant in the central province of Esfahan on Apr. 27, during a ceremony attended by Energy Minister Hamid Chitchan, IRNA news agency reported.

The 10-megawatt power plant has been manufactured with participation of Iran’s Ghadir Electricity and Energy Company and Greece’s Metka engineering firm in 7 months with an investment of $17 million.

The plant has 39,000 solar panels. The panels are equipped with an advanced solar tracking system‎, which automatically changes the direction of the panel towards sun rays.

The plant’s electricity output has already sold to the Renewable Energy Organization of Iran ‎‎ (SUNA) for a period of 20 years. ‎

Last fiscal year (ended on March 20, 2017), Iran added only 29 MW to renewables and brought the volume to 264 MW, which shares only 0.34 percent of the country’s total power generation capacity.

The country plans to increase the renewables capacity to 7.5 GW by 2030, of which 5 GW will be commenced in the next five years.

Iran plans to increase power generation capacity to 100 GW by 2021.

Last year, Iran’s electricity generation stood at 286 billion kilowatts hour (kWh).
