Iran plans to export $450-$500 million worth of fisheries in the current fiscal year (started March 2017), Isa Golshahi, an official with the Iranian Fisheries Organization, said May 2, Mehr news agency reported.

Iran exported 600 tons of fishery products to Russia in the first quarter of 2017, he said, adding that the figure is equal to Iran’s total fishery exports in 2016.

Golshahi said that Iran’s fishery products exports to Russia is increasing.

He added that the Islamic Republic currently exports sturgeon, trout, and shrimp as well as aquarium fishes to Russia.

He further said that Iran’s fishery exports in the last fiscal year (ended on March 20, 2017) accounted for $412 million.

Iran’s fishery output stood at 460,000 tons in the last fiscal year.

About 200,000 Iranians are active in about 70,000 aquaculture and fishing centers.

Iran has the capacity to produce 1 million tons of fish in cages in the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman, according to Hassan Salehi, head of Iran Fisheries Organization.

Cage fish farming is a relatively new method in Iran, whereby cages are placed in lakes, ponds, rivers or seas to breed fish until they can be harvested.

Per capita fish consumption in Iran is 10 kilograms, below the global average of 20 kilograms.
