By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Iran will produce over 26 million doses of FMD (foot and mouth disease) ‎vaccines during the current fiscal year (started March 20, 2017), Hassan Izadi, an official with the Razi Serum and Vaccine Research Institute (RSVRI), said.‎

The institute produced 16 million doses of FMD vaccines last fiscal year, Izadi said, IRIB news agency reported May 2.

About 13 million doses of the vaccine will be produced by RSVRI and the Ronak Pharmaceuticals Company, which will produce the remaining amount with the technology, transfered from RSVRI, he added.

The company produced 10 million doses of FMD vaccine last fiscal year.

Iran was an importer of vaccines for FMD till 2016. But since March 2016 the vaccine is produced by RSVRI.

FMD is a severe and highly contagious viral disease of livestock with significant economic costs. The disease affects cattle, sheep, and goats, and other cloven-hoofed ruminants.

The nuclear deal between Iran and the six world powers in July 2015 to end sanctions has enabled the import of raw materials for production of vaccines directly from European countries, reducing costs by 15 percent.
