Currently, some 48 foreign airlines are active in Iran, making scheduled and non-scheduled flights to the Islamic Republic, Reza Jafarzadeh, spokesman of the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran, said.

Demands from foreign airlines to receive license in Iran witnessed a significant rise following the nuclear deal with world powers, Jafarzadeh said, Mehr news agency reported May 16.

About 18 foreign airlines have entered Iran’s aviation field in past two years, he added.

Leading international companies such as British Airways and Air France are among the companies, which currently make flights to Iran, Jafarzadeh said.

Russia's Aeroflot, UAE's Air Arabia, Italy's Alitalia, Turkey's Atlas Jet, Azerbaijan's Azal, Greece's Aegean, Bahrain's Gulf Air, Germany's Lufthansa, and Ukraine International Airlines are also among the mentioned airlines.

European carriers stopped their flights to Iran after the West imposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Earlier, Iran said it is also considering direct flights to the United States, something that has not been realized so far. Direct flights stopped between the two countries more than three decades ago.

Iran and the United States severed air links when Washington broke relations in 1979 after Iranian militants stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and held the occupants hostage.

About 1 million Iranians live in the United States, mostly in California. Thousands fly to Iran every year, often through London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Dubai.
