By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

First Indian ship carrying 300 containers berthed in Iran’s south eastern Chabahar port, Behrooz Aghaei, secretary general of Ports and Maritime Organization in Sistan and Baluchestan province, said.

The ship is unloading its cargo, including rice, Aghaei said, IRNA news agency reported May 24.

The Iranian official further said that Iranian and foreign businessmen now can load or unload their cargo in Chabahar from/to India.

Direct goods transport between Chabahar port and India leads to a $750 decrease in costs for each 40-ft shipping container, Aghaei added.

Iran also implements a 75-85 percent discount for warehousing of containers in the port, he said.

Chabahar is being developed into a major transportation, energy, and industrial hub through joint investments by Iran, India and Afghanistan. India has already invested about $230 million in the project to develop Chabahar.

India has also agreed to build a 500-km railroad from Chabahar to Zahedan, the provincial capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, close to the Afghan border.
