Iran eyes new record in sugar production

Iran’s sugar production is estimated to exceed 1.7 million tons by the end of the current fiscal year (March 20, 2018), Alireza Yazdani, an official with Iran’s Agriculture Ministry, said.

The output will be 100,000 tons more compared to the preceding year, Yazdani said, Iran’s state TV reported Nov. 2.

He further said that over seven million tons of sugar beet will be harvested in the country during the current year, which is a new record.

Iran’s domestic demand for sugar stands at 2.2-2.4 million tons annually. The country supplies its imported sugar mainly from Brazil.

The main provinces producing sugar in the country are Khuzestan, West Azarbaijan and Khorasan Razavi.
