Tehran, Iran, December 1

By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

Iran and South Korea aim to sign a deal to build 450 railway wagons, in Iranian capital Tehran on Saturday, Islamic Republic Railways (RAI) told Trend December 1.

The ceremony will be attended by a high-ranking official from the Iranian Ministry of Transport, RAI added.

According to the report, the rail buses will be used to assemble 150 urban trains for passenger transportation.

Meanwhile, previous reports indicated that the mentioned 700-million euro deal would be signed by March.

Each day over 500,000 cars serve to take commuters to and from the capital city of Tehran, posing great economic, environmental, and health tolls on the people. This has forced authorities into thinking of replacements for cars, with the priority going to rail transportation.

Back in October, RAI CEO Said Mohammadzadeh said that within a period of four years, an Iranian-Korean consortium will provide part of the wagons needed to create the rail bus system in suburban Tehran.

Railways are responsible for 30 to 50 percent of suburban transportation in many countries. In Iran, the number hovers around 1.

In the past Iranian fiscal year (which ended March 20), 6 million out of 32 million suburban passengers in Iran were transported by rail.
