It is said that 93 percent of fuel stations in the Iranian capital city of Tehran is receiving Euro 4 standard gasoline and gas oil. However, this is while majority of the vehicles trafficking the busy streets of the metropolis remain at the Euro 2 standard.

According to Keramat Veiskarami, the director of Tehran District Oil Products Distribution Company, in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (since March 21), 15.45 million liters of gasoline was distributed in Tehran, showing a 6-percent rise compared to the same period last year.

As many of the vehicles still use old technologies, experts have expressed fear that the low lubrication factor in the Euro 4 gasoline will wear their engines down and cause greater air pollution.

Major Iranian car makers Saipa and Iran Khodro remain reluctant to discard their highest-produced cars which are the product of technologies of the 1980s and 1990s. In recent years they have equipped these cars with catalytic converters to present them in the market under the Euro 4 standard. However, their engine lubrication system is as before and will suffer damages running on newer versions of gasoline which contain less lubricating ingredients.

In 2013, officials said only 30 percent of the cars produced domestically met the Euro 4 standard (normally only owing to the above-mentioned change in their exhaust systems).

The mileage of these products exceeds 10 liters per 100 kilometers in downtown traffic, whereas brand new foreign rivals have improved that rate by half.

In the meantime, Tehran is a city for motorcycles. Official reports say motorcycles ride a total of 4.7 billion kilometers per year in Tehran. Almost all of them are of the carburetor type with huge energy intensity. Reports say such motorcycles produce 15 grams of soot per kilometer of mileage.
