By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:
The prices of various fruits in the Iranian market has sharply increased over the past few months amidst the rise of US dollar, Ecofars reported.
Prices have doubled over the past 2-3 months, said the report.
The rise of foreign currency affected the fruit sales in Iran from two sides. One one side, the sellers have decided to export what they could've sold at local markets. Due to excessive exports, the US dollar price has risen to about 19,000 tomans from 4,000 tomans per US dollar. The supply of the product to the local market dropped and prices have risen. Exports statistics also confirm this trend.
The second reason for the rise - prices of imported fruits. Due to the high cost of imports, local consumers have to buy them for much more expensive price compared to the local ones. For example, bananas, per kilogram would cost between 4,000-5,000 tomans, but now the price has exceeded 11,000 tomans.
Below are the prices in 19 regions of Tehran (per kilogram in tomans):
Bananas | 11,500 | Cabbage | 2,500 |
Pomegranates | 7,000 | Turnip | 3,800 |
Persimmons | 7,600 | Pepper | 6,300 |
Peach | 7,800 | Pumpkin | 3,800 |
Kiwi | 8,000 | Carrots | 3,200 |
Melon | 3,300 | Cucumbers | 3,600 |
Watermelon | 1,400 | Eggplants | 3,300 |
Onion | 1,900 | Tomatoes | 3,400 |
Potatoes | 2,500 | Oranges | 6,800 |
Lettuce | 3,800 | Grapes | 6,500 |
Sweet lemon | 4,900 |
The Central Bank of Iran has announced the price of the US dollar at 4,200 tomans, but the price of the US dollar varies near 14,000 and 14,500 tomans in the black market.
