If Iran builds an oil refinery abroad, it can sell oil without restriction, Hasan Khosrovjerdi, a member of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union, said in an interview with ILNA.

He noted that currently the major part of the produced gas is used in the country and no gas is left for export.

"All natural gas is consumed in Iran as a fuel. Approximately 620 million cubic meters of gas is consumed in the country."

Khosrovjerdi noted the importance of exporting gas as LPG. He noted that currently natural gas is used for heating in both Iran and abroad, and added that it is necessary to increase the number of petrochemical enterprises and to begin exporting gas used as fuel in the form of LPG.

“We can use oil refining and gas processing plants in various countries for exporting oil. If such plants are built on the coastal territories and are used only for the purpose of export, we will be able to engage in production of electricity and export of propane, butane and LPG,” he said.

He noted that compared with crude oil, the imposition of embargo on the petrochemical products is less probable, and added that Iran has a maximum of 50-60 oil customers, whereas there are 2,000 customers of petrochemical products.

It is very difficult to find and impose embargo on numerous customers of petrochemical products, he concluded.
