High housing prices lead to poverty in Iran, economist Abdollah Meshkani said, Trend reports via Iranian media.

Meshkani noted that poverty rate in the surrounding districts of Tehran is estimated to be higher than 25 percent.

The Research Center of the Iranian Parliament has earlier reported that poverty rate in Tehran hit 25 percent. Commenting on this, Meshkani noted that this report should specify the regions of Tehran, because it is a known fact that life standards are not the same throughout Tehran.

In order to regulate the housing prices, special attention should be paid to prices of land plots, he added.

The reports by the Research Center of the Iranian Parliament for the first six months of the current Iranian year (started March 21) state that two Iranian years ago in the Tehran county a family of four would need 20.76 million rials (roughly $494) per month for living. But in the summer of the current year this figure reached 27.28 rials (roughly $649). Reports show that compared to the spring of the current year, the increase was 3 million rials (roughly $71).
