TEHRAN, Iran, July 20

Trend:

The establishment of Mehran Special Economic Zone would develop the economy and production in Iran's Ilam Province, deputy official in Ilam Governorate Ahmad Karami told Trend.

"The government has submitted the bill for the establishment of Mehran Special Economic Zone to the parliament that did not pass, and now the Expediency Council should review the bill. We're following the issue closely, and hopefully it will lead to establishing of the special economic zone," he said.

Karami said the creation of an economic zone will positively affect the development of Ilam Province and help boost production.

"Iran has a 430-kilometer common border with Iraq, while Ilam Province has good trade relations with Iraq's Diyala nad Maysan provinces. We've signed a border agreement for cooperation with these provinces, and this could lead to good export and import relations, as well as investments," he said.

"The officials of Ilam province have requested to establish the special economic zone, while various MPs have worked on the bill, but the end result was not what people expected," he said.

The parliament did not pass the bill and the MPs insisted to send the bill to the Expediency Council for further review.
