EU Parliament President stresses Iran's key role in restoration of regional peace, stability

President of the European Parliament Martin Schultz in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Saturday underlined Iran's influential role in restoration of peace and stability to the region, Fars News reported.

"Iran is an important player in resolving the regional crises and its role in establishing peace and stability is undeniable," Schultz said.

The European Parliament president, meantime, reiterated that Iran's participation in the upcoming Vienna talks on Syria will be crucial.

Schultz, meantime, pointed to the parliamentary cooperation between the European Union and Iran, and said, "We have good parliamentary cooperation with Iran and we are ready for the expansion of bilateral ties."

Zarif, for his part, welcomed economic cooperation with the European Union, and said,

"We predict a lot of opportunities for cooperation between the two sides' economic sectors in the light of the outcome of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) (agreed by Iran and the six world powers in Vienna on July 14) and we also welcome broadening parliamentary talks between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the European Parliament within the framework of fundamental principles of the two countries' parliaments and respecting mutual values."

Schulz arrived in Tehran on Saturday morning to discuss expansion of relations between the EU and Iran.

He is also scheduled to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during his stay in Iran as well. Earlier today, he met with Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.
