By Khalid Kazimov - Trend:

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for unity in the fight against terrorism.

Mentioning that some 17,000 Iranians have been killed in terrorist attacks since the formation of the Islamic Republic, he added that terrorism can be subdued if all governments are determined to tackle the problem.

"We know how dreadful and despicable are terrorist acts," IRNA news agency quoted him as saying Nov 14 in a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Following last night's deadly attacks in Paris, Rouhani canceled today's visit to Italy and France, which was supposed to be his first European trip as Iranian president since he assumed office in 2013. The planned trip was a significant development, as no Iranian president has visited Europe in the past ten years.

He also expressed his hope that his Italy visit could be rescheduled.

At least 150 people were killed following a series of terrorist attacks in Paris Nov. 13.

Gunmen and suicide bombers attacked restaurants, a concert hall and a sports stadium at locations across Paris during a deadly rampage, which President Francois Hollande called an unprecedented terrorist attack.
