Tehran, Iran, Feb. 26

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

The next parliament needs to work on public welfare and people's livelihoods, right-wing MP Ahmad Tavakoli told Trend Feb. 26.

Households' economic condition is of highest importance in the current situation, he added.

Today is the election day in Iran. People are choosing their representatives for the parliament and the Assembly of Experts.

The two bodies are key pillars of the Islamic Republic. While the former is the country's legislative body, the latter is tasked with qualifying/disqualifying the country's supreme leader.

Iranians started voting at 8:00 local time (GMT +3:30) today. They will elect 290 members of the parliament, and 88 members of the Assembly of Experts.

Some 4,844 candidates are competing, while about 55 million Iranians are eligible to vote. Each nominee should get at least 25 percent of votes in his constituency, otherwise a second round of elections will have to be held a month after the results of the first round.
