Boosting ties with Baku will help Tehran to boost its ties with other neighboring countries including Russia, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, the Iranian government spokesman said at a press conference, Trend's correspondent reported.

Nobakht further said that Iran's ties with Azerbaijan will reach strategic cooperation level in the near future.

He explained that Iran's relations with certain neighboring countries including Russia will witness significant boom within the axis of developing Tehran-Baku relations.

Nobakht, who heads Iran's Management and Planning Organization, also referred to the recent visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev to Tehran, saying the two sides are determined to develop mutual ties.

He also said that the recently signed agreements between Tehran and Baku have strategic importance, and the sides continue to pursue the implementation of these documents.

Iranian and Azerbaijani officials signed 11 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on the sidelines of a meeting between President Aliyev and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Tehran Feb. 23.

Nobakht further said that the Iranian president has ordered the Ministry of Transportation and the Management and Planning Organization to complete the construction of the Astara(Iran) - Astara (Azerbaijan) railway as soon as possible.

The aforementioned project is a part of the North-South transport corridor, which is intended to connect Northern Europe to Southeastern Asia. It will serve as a link to connect the railways of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.

It is planned to transport six million tons of cargo per year via the North-South corridor in the first phase, and 15-20 million tons of cargo in the future.
