Iran’s Khamenei: Modern era is both talks and missiles

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says that modern era is "the era of both negotiations and missiles."

Khamenei's website quoted him as saying those in Iran, who claim that tomorrow's world is the world of negotiations, not of missiles, show their unawareness if they say this unintentionally, otherwise such claims constitute "treason".

Iran's supreme leader made these remarks addressing a meeting with a number of religious panegyrists on March 30.

During the meeting, Khamenei further said that any negotiations without having defensive power would force Iran to "back off".

"If the Islamic System seeks technology and negotiations, but lacks defensive power, it would be forced to back off being faced even with a tiny country's threats," he added.

"I support political talks on global issues, but not with everyone," said Khamenei.

Elsewhere in his remarks Khamenei also claimed that "enemy" is working against the belief in Islam, the belief in the Islamic republic's efficiency and durability.

He further said that during talks, Iran should be strong and negotiate in a way not to be deceived.

"When we have agreement on paper, but sanctions remain in place, and there is no development in trade, that means something is wrong," added Khamenei.

Following months of talks with six world powers, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear activities in exchange to removal of international sanctions on it.

Last January, the US and the EU lifted their nuclear-related sanctions as the agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA or nuclear deal) came into force.
