Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi has prevented shipping Iran's heavy water to the US.

Salehi said that he has made the decision following a US court ruling on the confiscation of $2 billion of Iran's assets, Fars news agency reported.

The official further explained that the decision came as the Islamic Republic is concerned over the seizure of assets.

The US government in April completed an $8.6 million deal to buy 32 tons of heavy water from Iran. However, 251 American lawmakers May 25 voted for a bill that would prohibit such purchases next year. The measure is yet to be approved by the US Senate.

On Apr. 20, a US court ruled that $2 billion of Iranian assets in a US bank account had to be turned over to the families of the American victims of a 1983 bombing in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, and other attacks blamed on Iran.
