A high-ranking member of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has reportedly been killed in recent clashes in Syria.

Brigadier General Hassan Akbari was killed in clashes with “terrorists” in the Syrian city of Palmyra (Tadmur), Fars news agency reported Dec. 14.

According to the report, he commanded a special battalion in the ancient city.

Earlier on Dec. 13, Iranian media reports said that another IRGC member, Ahmad Jalalinasab, was killed in the same city.

While the Syrian army and allies are advancing through the city of Aleppo, the “Islamic State” (IS, ISIS, ISIL, or Daesh) terrorist group has reportedly recaptured Palmyra in central Syria.

According to official announcements by the Islamic Republic of Iran, over the past couple of years more than 1,000 Iranian servicemen deployed to Syria to back President Bashar Assad’s government have been killed in the Arab country.
