Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the Uruguayan president stressed the need for promoting bilateral ties in all fields, Irna reports.

During the meeting, Zarif pointed to traditional and regular ties between Iran and Uruguay based on mutual respect, stressing the necessity for all-out ties and diversifying cooperation.

Given presidency of Uruguay over Mercosur, he called for Iran’s further communications with the bloc through cooperation with the country and Brazil.

Mercosur is a South American trade bloc established by the Treaty of Asunción in 1991 and Protocol of Ouro Preto in 1994. Its full members are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Cooperation in the banking sector, agriculture, dam construction and knowledge-based companies were among the other topics discussed during the meeting.

The Uruguayan president, for his part, welcomed deepening of ties between Iran and Uruguay, calling for promotion of economic ties in all fields.

The Iranian foreign minister and his accompanying delegation arrived in Montevideo Wednesday morning as part of his tour of Africa and South America which already took him to Senegal and Brazil.

During his visit to Uruguay, Zarif is slated to hold talks with the country’s Senate chief and speaker of House of Representatives and vice president.

An economic meeting will also be held between the two countries’ foreign ministers.

After meeting with Uruguayan officials, Zarif will leave for Namibia.
