Iran will not accept limitations beyond commitments - President

President Hassan Rouhani described the JCPOA as the first major base for confidence building between Iran and Western states, saying that the country will not accept limitations beyond its commitments, according IRNA.

The JCPOA stands for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the official name of the agreement reached bewteen Iran and six world major powers in 2015 to give Tehran sanctions relief in return for scaling back its nuclear program.

In a telephone conversation with French President Emanuel Macron late Sunday, Rouhani maintained that Iran attaches special significance to consolidating ties with France.

“In view of very excellent capacities for mutual cooperation in political, cultural and economic fields as well as regional issues, we are determined to strengthen our relations with France in all fields,” he said.

During the phone talks which lasted over an hour, Rouhani reiterated that sustainability of JCPOA will help strengthen regional security.

“Confidence is the basis of our relations and the JCPOA is an important pillar of confidence between Iran and Western states,” he said.

Noting that Americans’ stance on the JCPOA is flagrant violation of the agreement between seven countries, he added that Iran has taken a very significant decision in the fields of banking ties, foreign exchange and other economic issues in recent days and has taken measures in the face of any decision the US is to make on May 12.

US current stance regarding the JCPOA amounts to its breach of the deal and creating fear and ambiguity for the countries and economic enterprises dealing with Iran, he said, noting that even if the US announces on May 12 that it will stay in the deal but wants to continue the same course it did over the two past years, “it will not be acceptable to us.”

Underlining that future of the JCPOA after 2025 will be decided by the international regulations and Iran will never accept any restrictions beyond its commitments, the chief executive said that the JCPOA and any other issue under its pretext is non-negotiable.

As to regional cooperation, he said that Iran has so far indicated that it is ready for dialogue to safeguard regional stability and security, particularly fighting terrorism.

During the phone conversation, Macron reiterated the need for boosting Tehran-Paris cooperation in all fields, saying that EU, especially France, has totally defended the JCPOA and France will stay in the JCPOA 100 percent.

Maintaining that adherence to the JCPOA will help promote confidence and stability in the region, he said that France and EU’s definite stance is to stay in the JCPOA and they ask Iran to do the same.

“EU and France accept the JCPOA as it is,” Macron said.

France has always favored a stable Middle East, as it believes that the JCPOA is a major model for solving regional problems and it should be preserved by all parties, he said, noting, “This is an important issue that I raised in the US Congress.”
