An official with the Red Crescent Society(RCS) in Iran's southern Bandar Abbas city said the 5-Richter earthquake that jolted this city late Sunday night, according to initial reports, had no damage, Iranian official IRNA news agency reported Jan. 26.
Head of RCS local office Ali A'ma said since the epicenter of the quake was in the mountains around the city and because of the probability of landslide, rescue teams have been dispatched to the nearby villages.
He urged people to keep cool but to take safety precautions.
An earthquake measuring 5 on Richter scale shook Bandar Abbas and surrounding areas at 23:41 Jan. 25 (local time).
The tremor, which lasted for about 8 seconds, caused panic among people.
The epicenter of the quake was 31 kilometers north of Bandar Abbas and in the depth of 8 kilometers underground.
