Some 7-10 people die in Iran per day due to the lack of organ for transplants, Katayoun Najafizadeh, an official with the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Treatment said.

Najafizadeh said that each year 25 percent of patients in the country who are waiting for organ transplant, die.

Some 5,000-8,000 brain deaths occur in Iran annually, she said, adding that just 665 organ transplant were carried out in Iranian fiscal year 1392 (March 2013-March 2014), Iran's IRNA news agency reported on Feb. 24.

This is while the number of organ transplants should be between 2,500 and 4,000 in the country, she noted.

The highest number of organ donation in the world is in Spain with 35 donations per one million people, while the figure is just 8.7 donations per one million people in Iran, she said.

About 53 networks for collecting organs have been set up across the country since September 2014. The Islamic Republic administration has also formed a higher council for organ transplant in July 2014.
