The number of female drug users has increased in Iran, head of the country's State Welfare Organization (Behzisti) Anoushiravan Mohseni-Bandpei said, IRNA news agency reported.

Today, 9.6 percent (130,000 people) of drug users in Iran are women, according to the statistics of Iran's Drug Control Headquarters.

Head of Behzisti said that today, there are 1.3 million drug users in Iran, adding that 22 percent of them use industrially manufactured drugs.

Drug addiction remains a heavy problem for Iran, as eight people die in the country because of an overdose, according to the country's Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

Meanwhile, Tehran police chief Hossein Sajedinia previously told Iran's IRIB TV channel 2 that Iranian capital has over 1,500 runaway addict women and over 15,000 homeless addict men living in the streets.

Four years ago as per reports, the number of runaway addict women in Tehran was a mere 100, while homeless addict women in the city numbered 5,000.
