Tehran, Iran, June 3
By Mehdi Sepahvand –- Trend:
About 30 million tons of industrial waste is produced in Iran each year, according to Director of Water and Soil Affairs at the Department of Environment Javad Sorush.
About 8 million tons of this waste is special waste, which is the output of factories using chemicals, Sorush told ISNA news agency June 3.
Special waste is a waste that requires special handling, trained people, and/or special disposal methods. A waste may be a special waste because of its quantity, concentration, or physical, chemical, or biological characteristics.
The official pointed out that over the past 14 years a large number of petrochemical refineries have been built in the southern Iranian energy zone of Asaluyeh, all without a waste treatment facility.
He added, however, that Iran is taking preliminary steps to build two industrial waste treatment facilities in the area.
