Consumer market

In January to May 2009 a rise of the retail goods turnover got restored amid continuing rise of the community services and was 9.2%. The amount of retail goods turnover comprised AZN 4614.4mln or 8.2% up as compared to last year.

According to data provided by the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, of the total amount, AZN 3052.1mln was made up of foodstuffs, AZN 1562.3mln - non foodstuffs. The increase in sales on both goods was 10.8% and 3.1% respectively.

In January to May commercial services to population made up 1374.9 million manat, or up 1.9 percent.

Prices

In January to May 2009 the growth pace of inflation was 4.9% as compared to similar period of 2008. In January to May 2008, this figure was 19.2%. A total of 586 food and non-food products and types of services have been included in the food basket to calculate inflation.

In May 2009, the prices for the consumer goods and service tariffs reduced 0.2%. The food prices decreased 0.4%. The prices of non-foods declined 0.2%. The service prices remained unchanged.

Thus, during this period, the food prices rose 3.8% compared to January to May 2008, non-food products - 6.4%, service prices - 5.8%.

In May 2009, the base index of the consumer prices incurring seasonal changes (fruits and vegetable) and being regulated by the Government made up 99.4% as compared to the previous month, and 106.2% to the same period of the last year.    

As compared to the previous month, in May 2009 the index of industrial goods price increased 16.6%, but reduced 37.4% compared to the same period of the last year.

The price in oil and gas production increased 21.9% in May compared to April 2009, but decreased 52.7% compared to the same period of 2008.  

The prices in refining chemical products increased 3.1% in the month and reduction totaled 23.7% at annualized pace. In May, the prices in metallurgy reduced by 1.8%, and 19.1% at annualized pace.

The prices for electricity, gas and water remained in its previous level in May as compared to April 2009, but grew 1.6% at annualized pace.
