Review of agricultural sector in Azerbaijan (January-February 2011)

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Feb. 24 signed an order "on additional measures to develop livestock sector in Azerbaijan" in order to ensure food security by ratcheting up livestock production and developing cattle breeding.

Under the order, the Agroleasing joint-stock company will receive 5 million manat from the President's Reserve Fund to import breeding cattle in order to lease it to farmers at a discount of 50 percent.

Azerbaijan is also developing astateprogramon poultrybusiness development.In thenear future,it will besubmitted tothe Cabinet of Ministers . The state programis developed upon orderof the Cabinet of Ministers , together with the representatives of the Agriculture Ministry , StateVeterinaryService under theAgriculture Ministry.

In the agriculture, the Azerbaijani agricultural enterprises, private businesses, households continue spring field work. According to State Statistics Committee, as of March 1, despite the unfavorable weather, spring seeding was carried out in 37,000 hectares of land, which is 12.5 percent more than the same period of 2010.

According to the data provided by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Agriculture, in 2011 Azerbaijan can produce about 2.5 million tons of grain, which exceeds the previous year.

Azerbaijan 's grain need is three million tons per year. In 2010 the country produced two million tons and imported one million tons of grain. Azerbaijan imports grain mainly from Kazakhstan.

In the field of livestock, compared to the same period of the last year, meat production grew by 5.5 percent or 3,500 tons to 66,200 tons, milk - 24,000 tons or 11.3 percent to 237,400 tons, while production of eggs fell by 29.5 million, or 14.8 percent to 169.8 million.
