Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January-April 2011)

In January-April 2011, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with 127 countries comprised $10.721 billion or an increase of 35.84 percent compared to January-April 2010. The amount of export increased by 30.59% as compared to last year and comprised $8.004bln, while import increased 54.12%, totaling $2.717bln. Azerbaijan exported 1,175 types of goods and imported 4,758. During the reported period, the indicator of export exceeded the indicator of import and thus, the black ink of import-export operations amounted to $5.287bln.

Like previous years, the main item of Azerbaijan's export was oil and oil products.

Most of the exports of Azerbaijan or 85.39 percent in the four months accounted for the export of crude oil. In January-April was exported crude oil worth $6.835 billion, exceeding the figure for the same period last year by 28.77 percent.

During the reporting period, oil products were exported in amount of $458.129 million (a decrease for the year at 9.28 percent), accounting for 5.72 percent of total exports.

In this period the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $2.814bln which makes up 17.51% of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Italy is followed by France ($1.235bln) and USA ($0.561bln). Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

The largest volume of export in January-April 2011 accounted for the Far East. In January-April 2011, this indicator totaled $ 6.859.3 b illion. Azerbaijan exported goods amounting to $ 1.145.1b ln (15.31% out of the total volume of the country's export) to the CIS countries. Azerbaijan exported to CIS fuel, oil products, bitumen minerals, fruits, animal and vegetable oil and other.

The traditional domination of three countries in import seems to be as: Russia ($ 488.5 mln), Turkey ($ 323.5 mln) and Germany ($ 278.1 mln).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 29.65 percent in the first three months accounted for the imports of machines, equipment, electric vehicles and their spare parts. In January-April, the machinery and equipment import amounted to $805.54 million, exceeding the figure for in the same period of the last year by 67 percent.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in January-April amounted to $1.978.5 billion or 18.45 percent of total foreign trade turnover compared to 14.47 percent in 2010, 16.15 percent in 2009 and 7.21 percent in 2008.

Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $1.145.15 billion (14.31 percent of total exports) and imports - $833.5 million (30.67 percent of total imports). Thus, the black ink of import-export operations with CIS countries amounted to $311.7mln.

The share of public sector in exports made up $ 7.662 bln (95.7%), private sector held $ 0.322 bln (4.02%). The share of export operations by physical entities comprised $ 20.235 mln (0.25%).

In the import operations, 38.95 percent or $ 1.058 billion accounted for the public sector, 56.34 percent or $1.53 billion - private and 4.7 percent or $ 122.895 million - the share of individuals.

In total, 4,178 legal entities ( 2,495 ) and physical entities ( 1,638 ) participated in the foreign trade operations.
