Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January-June 2012)

The foreign trade turnover with 135 world countries amounted to $17.17 billion in Jan.-June 2012, or 1.4 percent less than last year. The volume of exports decreased by 2.9 percent to $12.71 billion compared to Jan.-June 2011. The volume of import increased by 3.14 percent and hit $4.46 billion. Azerbaijan exported 1,714 products, and imported 5,548 different goods. The index of export exceeded import as of Jan.-June 2012. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $8.25 billion.

As in previous periods, oil and oil products are mainly exported from Azerbaijan.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports for Jan.-June 2012 (86.5 percent) falls to crude oil. The average export price of Azerbaijani oil, according to customs statistics for 2012 so far is $864.664 per ton, including in June - $811.16 per ton.

Azerbaijan in June increased its gas exports by 1.32 times (registration at customs) compared to May, and its share in total exports reached 2.34 percent compared to 2.61 percent in 2011.

In Jan.-June 2012, Azerbaijan exported chemical products worth $96.34 million. Compared to the same period of last year, exports of chemical products increased by over 2.26 times. The share of chemical products amounted to 0.76 percent ($12.711 billion) in total exports compared to 0.33 percent as of July 1, 2011. It should be noted that the "Azerkimya" production association increased exports of the main kinds of products: polyethylene, propylene, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, and others to Turkey. Thus, over 50 percent of all exports of "Azerkimya" are exported to the Turkish market.

The success of the country in exports of aluminum and its products should be stressed. As of Jan.-June, 2012, Azerbaijan increased export of aluminum by over 20 times.

In total, about $50.384 million were sold abroad or 20.36 times more than the same period of last year. At the same time, the share of exports of aluminum and its products in the country's total exports amounted to 0.4 percent as of July 1, 2012 compared to 0.02 percent as of July 1, 2011.

Azerbaijan has two aluminum plants in Sumgait and Ganja, as well as its own raw material base (alunite). A new aluminum plant opened in Ganja produces 50,000 tons of high quality aluminum per year. It is capable of producing 100,000-200,000 tons. In this regard, the Azerbaijani government announced the plans to cease importing finished aluminum products.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell to Italy in Jan.-June 2012. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $2.885.8 bln which makes up 22.7 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Italy is followed by Israel ($1.323.3 bln) and Indonesia ($1.128.1 billion). Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding the first three months. Turkey took a lead in January 2008 and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Turkey ranks first on largest import volume ($723.1 million) in Jan.-June, 2012. The Azerbaijani imports hit 16.22 percent. Russia ranks second - $640.9 million and Germany - third ($344.6 million).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports (28.02 percent) in Jan.-June fell to the imports of cars, equipment, mechanisms, electric equipment and their spare parts.

The import of vehicles and spare parts ranks second in terms of the share volume in the country's import (13.66 percent). The import of ferrous metals ranks third (13.3 percent).

The largest increase in imports in January-June 2012 was observed in transporting the furniture into the country compared to the same period of last year (by 74.11 percent) although its share in imports is only 1.04 percent. The import of flour significantly declined by 98.35 percent. This testifies to the increase in grain crops in Azerbaijan.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-June amounted to over $1.6571 billion or 44.1 percent less compared to Jan-June 2011. Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $537.354 million (4.23 percent of total export), which is 68.86 percent less compared to the same period 2011 and imports - $1.12 billion (25.11 percent of total import), or 9.61 percent less compared to Jan-June 2011.

Thus, the red ink of import-export operations with CIS countries amounted to $582.646 million which is 21.4 percent more compared to Jan-June 2011.

During this period, about 6,246 legal entities and individuals were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,069 - legal entities and 3,177 - individuals.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $12.06 billion (94.89 percent), private - $577.89 million (4.55 percent), the share of individuals - $73.73 million (0.58 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $901.62 million (20.22 percent), the private sector - $2.71 billion (74.66 percent), individuals -$227.94 million (5.11 percent).
