Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (Jan.-July 2012)

The foreign trade turnover with 140 world countries amounted to $19.38 billion in Jan.-July. 2012, or 5.94 percent less than Jan.-July last year. The volume of exports decreased by 9.05 percent to $14.08 billion compared to the same period of 2011. The volume of import decreased by 3.47 percent and hit $5.229 billion. Azerbaijan exported 1,796 products, and imported 5,694 different goods. The index of export exceeded import as of Jan.-July 2012. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $8.78 billion.

As in previous periods, oil and oil products are mainly exported from Azerbaijan.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports (85.93 percent) accounted for the export of crude oil in Jan.-July 2012.

According to the customs statistics, the average export price on Azerbaijani oil in 2012 totaled $12.100.9 billion per ton.

Azerbaijan decreased gas exports (customs clearance) by 6.5 percent in July compared to June.

As of July, its share in total exports amounted to 2.56 percent compared to 2.61 percent for 2011. According to the State Customs Committee, in January-July, gas exports from the country amounted to 3.981.089 bln m3, according to the meters, including 459.430.5 mln m3 in July compared to 491.260.4 mln m3 in June.

In January-July, Azerbaijan exported chemical products worth $104.7 million. Compared to the same period of last year, exports of chemical products increased by twice. The share of chemical products amounted to 0.74 percent in total exports in January-July. Chemical products worth $10.608 million were exported from Azerbaijan in January and February last year. It should be noted that "Azerkimya" production association increased exports of the main kinds of products: polyethylene, propylene, isopropyl alcohol, polyethylene, propylene glycol, and others to Turkey. Thus, over 50 percent of all exports of "Azerkimya" is exported to the Turkish market.

The success of the country in exports of aluminum and its products should be stressed. As of Jan.-July, Azerbaijan increased aluminum export by 20 times.

In total, during the period, aluminum worth $58.020 million or 18.77 times more than the same period last year were sold abroad. The share of exports of aluminum and aluminum goods, of the total export volume of the country was 0.41 percent as of Aug. 1.

Azerbaijan has two aluminum plants - in Sumgait and Ganja, as well as its own raw material base (alunite). A new aluminum plant opened in Ganja produces 50,000 tons of high quality aluminum per year. It is capable of producing 100,000-200,000 tons. In this regard, the Azerbaijani government announced the plans to cease the import of finished products from aluminum.

Azerbaijan is a net exporter of electricity for the fourth year. It resumed exports in July. According to the State Customs Committee, in January-July 2012, electricity supply for export from the country amounted to 270.895 million kilowatt / hours in accordance with the meters.

Export price for 2012 is $221.85 per 1,000 kilowatt / hours, including $306.51 in July compared to $201.5 in June.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $3.098.7 bln which makes up 22.00 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Israel ($1.399.0 bln) and Indonesia ($1.219.2 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Turkey ranks first on largest import volume ($837.4 million) in January-July 2012. About 15.80 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Russia ranks second - $753.4 million and Germany - third ($415.6 million)

Most of Azerbaijan's imports (27.66 percent) in Jan.-July accounted for the imports of machines, equipment, electric vehicles and their spare parts.

Imports of vehicles and spare parts ranks second in the country's import (15.09 percent).

Import of ferrous metals ranks third (13.55 percent of total import volume).

Furniture delivery has the greatest increase in imports in January-July 2012 (by 55.78 percent) compared to the same period of last year.

Although its share in imports hits only 0.99 percent.

Imports of flour significantly reduced by 98.32 percent. This means an increase in grain crop and flour processing in Azerbaijan.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-July amounted to over $1.919.2 billion or 9.9 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $617.7 million (4.4 percent of total export) and imports - $1.301.5 billion (24.6 percent of total import). Thus, the red ink of import-export operations with CIS countries amounted to $683.8 million.

During this period, about 6,928 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,245 - legal entities and 3,683 - physical entities.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $13.31 billion (94.54 percent), private - $684 million (4.85 percent), the share of physical entities - $84.1 million (0.59 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $1.094 million (20.64 percent), the private sector - $3.94 billion (74.48 percent), physical entities -$257.74 million (4.92 percent).
