Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January-August 2013)

The foreign trade turnover with 144 world countries amounted to $23.09 billion in January-August 2013, or 5.69 percent more than in January-August 2012. The volume of exports increased by 0.8 percent to $15.95 billion compared to the same period of 2012. The volume of import increased by 18.54 percent and hit $7.13 billion. Azerbaijan exported 1,750 products, and imported 5,727 different goods. As of Jan.-Aug. 2013, the nominal index of export exceeded import. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $8.82 billion.

As in previous periods, oil, gas and oil products were mainly exported from Azerbaijan in Jan.-Aug. 2013.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports as of Jan.-Aug. 2013 (84.12 percent) fell to the export of crude oil. The exports of crude oil decreased by 0.85 percent compared to Jan.-Aug. 2012.

The export of oil products decreased by 3.91 percent during this period. As of Jan.-Aug. 2013, around 5.2 percent of total exports from the country fell to the oil products.

Some 18.741 million tons of oil were transported via the Heydar Aliyev Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, 2.622 million tons - the Baku-Supsa pipeline, 1.163 million tons - via the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline and 628,311 tons were shipped by rail to Baku-Batumi in January-August.

In January -August 2013 gas exports from Azerbaijan (control device data) hit 63.4 percent of export for whole 2012. As of January- August 2013, the share of gas in total exports amounted to 3.28 percent (3.56 percent a month earlier) compared to 2.71 percent for whole 2012 and 2.61 percent in 2011.

According to the State Customs Committee, gas exports from the country amounted to 4.435.232 billion cubic meters in January -August 2013. Around 2.200.422 billion cubic meters of gas worth $523.241 million were registered in the customs declarations. The exports increased by 36.73 percent compared to the first eight months of 2012. Around 128.876 million cubic meters of exported gas worth $29.009 million were registered in August. The export price totaled $237.79 per thousand cubic meters in 2013. It hit $ 225.09 in August.

Azerbaijan has been a net exporter of gas since 2007, primarily due to Shah Deniz field.

Azerbaijan exported chemical products to the amount of $40.6 million in January-August or by 65.01 percent less than in the same period of last year. The figure hits 0.25 percent of a total export volume.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $3.793.3 bln which makes up 23.78 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Indonesia ($1.949.8 bln) and Thailand ($1.332.2 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Russia ranks first on largest import volume ($1.015.9 billion) in Jan.-Aug. 2013. About 14.24 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Turkey ranks second - $978.4 million and Great Britain - third ($837.2 million).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 24.85 percent in the reporting period fell to the import of machinery, equipment, electrical equipment and spare parts. The machinery and equipment worth $1.77 billion were imported in January-August or by 6.99 percent more than in the same period of last year.

Many vehicles and parts worth $1 billion (an 11 percent increase, the share in the total imports - 14.04 percent) and wood and wooden goods - by $224.8 million (a 19.41 percent increase, the share in the total imports - 3.15 percent) were brought in the country.

Azerbaijan imported wheat flour to the amount of $15.12 million in January-August or 0.21 percent of total imports and exceeds the index of the same period of last year by nearly 15 times. According to the report, imports of wheat increased by 61.53 percent - up to $252.74 million per year or 3.54 percent of the total import volume of the country during this period.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-Aug. 2013 amounted to $2.59 billion or 11.2 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $872 million by increasing by 21.46 percent and imports - $1.72 billion by increasing by 15.78 percent. As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $852 million.

Thus, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with EU countries amounted to $9.90 billion in January-August 2013, or 42.9 percent of the country's foreign trade turnover.

Around 45.8 percent of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover fell to the countries-non EU and CIS members in January-August or $23.08 billion.

In January-August Azerbaijani exports to the EU countries amounted to $7.47 billion, or 46.8 percent of total exports ($15.954 billion) amid a 3.4 percent growth. Imports from EU ($2.435 billion) increased by 46.7 percent and hit 34.15 percent of total imports ($7.132 billion). As a result, the country had a trade surplus with the EU at the level of $5.035 billion or 57 percent of the country's trade surplus ($ 8.821 billion).

In January-August, exports to the countries-non EU and CIS members decreased by 3.45 percent - up to $7.611 billion or 47.71 percent of total exports.

Imports increased by 3.65 percent and hit $2.972 billion or 41.67 percent of all imports. As a result, the country received surplus worth $ 4.639 billion with these countries.

During this period, about 5,637 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,358 - legal entities and 2,279 - physical entities.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $15.03 billion (94.23 percent), private sector - $815.82 million (5.11 percent), the share of physical entities - $112.19 million (0.7 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $2.22 billion (31.05 percent), the private sector - $4.55 billion (63.81 percent), physical entities -$367.5 million (5.15 percent).
