Agriculture in Azerbaijan (January-March 2014)

The agricultural production in Azerbaijan increased by 3.4 percent in the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same period of 2013 and amounted to 551.8 million manat, according to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee. The output of products in crop sector increased by 5.5 percent, while by 3.3 percent in the livestock sector compared to the first quarter of 2013.

Plant growing

The agricultural enterprises, private entrepreneurs, households in almost all regions of the country have begun the spring field work in Azerbaijan's agriculture. The agricultural operations are being conducted at the fields. The necessary farm equipment was provided. As of April 1, spring crops were planted on a ​​120,000 hectare area or by 7.2 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Thus, some 46,200 hectares of land were planted with perennials, 29,500 hectares - potatoes, 25,100 hectares - vegetables, 11,300 hectares - cereals and leguminous, 3,700 hectares - melons, 1,800 hectares - sugar beet, 2,100 acres - sunflowers.

Animal husbandry

The livestock production growth was observed in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the same period of 2013. Thus, around 107,100 tonnes of meat (a 2.4 percent growth), milk - 405,400 tonnes (a 2.8 percent growth) were produced in January - March 2014. Some 371.3 million eggs were produced during the same period or by 13.6 percent more than in the same period of 2013. The timely livestock and veterinary actions and work conducted to improve the productive qualities of the breed of cattle had a positive impact on the dynamic development of livestock.

Azerbaijan's animal husbandry sector numbered around 2,718,900 cattle, including 1,304,900 cows and buffaloes, 8,852,800 sheep and goats as of early April 2014. The number of cows and buffaloes increased by 1.1 percent, while the number of sheep and goats increased by one percent compared to the same period of 2013. The timely livestock and veterinary actions and work conducted to improve the productive qualities of the breed of cattle had a positive impact on the dynamic development of livestock.
