Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January 2016)

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January 2016, the Azerbaijani consumer market amounted to 2.991 billion manat, which is 4.2 percent more than its turnover for the same period of 2015.

The monthly consumer expenses are estimated at 311.9 manat per capita in January 2016 or by 47.3 manat more compared to January 2015.

According to the State Statistics Committee, the Azerbaijani trading networks sold consumer goods to the population at 2.243 billion manat in January 2016, which is 4.3 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Legal entities ensured 12 percent of trade turnover.

The monthly retail trade turnover amounted to 233.9 manat, which is 41.8 manat more than in January 2015.

The food trade (1.125 billion manat) increased by 4.1 percent from year to year in January 2016, while retail sales of non-food items (1.118 billion manat) - by 5.2 percent.

Paid services worth 666.9 million manat were rendered to the population in January 2016 or 3.6 percent more compared to January 2015. Legal entities ensured 64.5 percent of this growth and rendered the services worth 497 million manat or by 3.1 percent more than in 2015.

Over this period, every citizen of the country acquired consumer goods at 69.5 manat per month, which is 4.62 manat more than in January 2015.

Transportation, public utilities and communication services prevail in the structure of paid services.

Prices

According to the State Statistics Committee, inflation in the country amounted to 13.6 percent in January 2016 compared to January 2015.

The food prices increased by 4.6 percent, non-food items - 17.2 percent and tariffs for services - 4.6 percent in January 2016 compared to January 2015.

Such a high rate of inflation in the country was the result of the impact of national currency devaluation.

The prices on consumer goods and tariffs on services increased by 5.8 percent in Azerbaijan in January 2016 compared to December 2015.

The food prices increased by 8.7 percent, non-food items - 5.6 percent, tariffs for services - 2.1 percent in Azerbaijan in January 2016 compared to the same period of 2015.

The prices on rice, flour, bread, buckwheat, pasta, sausages, fish and dairy products, mutton, beef, poultry, eggs, butter and vegetable oil, sugar and granulated sugar, lemons, oranges, tangerines, apples, pears, bananas, quinces, pomegranates, persimmons, chestnuts, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbages, eggplants, sweet peppers, beets, carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic, greens, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products increased in Azerbaijan during a month.

Prices on other food products were not greatly changed.

The prices on fabrics, clothes and shoes, building materials, household appliances, data processing equipment, audio and video recorders, telephones and cameras, electronic goods, furniture and household goods, carpets and other floor coverings, glass products, dishes and cutlery, detergents, medicines, cars and spare parts, stationery and jewelry increased in January.

The tariffs for international passenger transport by air and rail transport decreased in January.

The prices on medical services, international passenger transport by bus, car repair, home appliances, furniture, cleaning, repair and hire of clothing increased during this period. Moreover, the catering, hotel and inn services rose in prices.

The prices on other non-food products and services were not greatly changed.

The base index of consumer prices, calculated except for the goods and services subject to seasonal changes (fruits and vegetables) increased by 14.8 percent in January 2016 compared to January 2015.

The industrial producer price index increased by 2.8 percent in Azerbaijan in January 2016 compared to December 2015. A 22 percent growth was observed compared to January 2015.

During this period, producer prices in the mining industry increased by 2.8 percent and by 3 percent in the manufacturing industry.

The producer prices increased by 24.8 and 1.8 percent accordingly compared to January 2015.
