Azerbaijani IT sector (January-April 2017)

Information and communication services worth 530 million manat were rendered for Azerbaijan's population and organizations in January-April 2017, which is by 3 percent more than in January-April 2016.

Some 80.9 percent of income received through the communication sector accounted for the non-state enterprises during the reporting period.

Around 71.7 percent of the total volume of information and communication services accounted for the services rendered to the population. Some 48.3 percent of a total volume of obtained income accounted for mobile services.

Mobile communication market

The revenues obtained from mobile services reached 256.2 million manat in Azerbaijan in January-April 2017 or by 0.1 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Over 61,200 mobile devices were registered in the IMEI-code system in April 2017, which is by 22.5 percent more than in April 2016.

Around 50,000 mobile devices were registered in the IMEI-code system in April 2016.

Over 245,800 mobile devices were registered in the IMEI-code system in January-April 2017, which is by 27.5 percent more than in January-April 2016.

The total number of IMEI-codes registered via e-government portal has exceeded 1.52 million after the system was launched.

The registration system became operational in Azerbaijan May 1, 2013. It is necessary to register mobile devices imported into the territory of the republic for private use (in the networks of the mobile network operators of Azerbaijan) within 30 days.

The registration period for IMEI codes of mobile phones was extended from 30 days to 60 days for tourists and participants not to have problems with the use of mobile communication in connection with the Islamic Solidarity Games. These changes will remain in effect until June 1, 2017.

Registration of mobile devices is available through the Electronic government (e-gov.az) portal, as well as at Azerbaijan’s postal operator Azerpost LLC.

Registration is carried out within 24 hours from the moment of making an application. The registration of the IMEI code of a mobile device for personal use is 5 manat, for commercial sale - 1.6 manat.

As of May 1, 2017, Samsung devices rank first on the Azerbaijani market of mobile devices with a 55.1 percent share.

The sale of Samsung devices increased by 2 percent in January-April 2017.

A market share of Samsung devices increased by 5.1 percent in the country compared to the same period of 2016.

As of January-April 2017, the sale of Apple mobile devices decreased by 9.8 percent in Azerbaijan.

As of May 1, 2017, the share of Apple devices was 16.4 percent on the Azerbaijani market or by almost 10 percent less compared to the same period of 2016. Apple ranks second on the Azerbaijani market of mobile devices.

Nokia's share decreased by 19.2 percent in January-April 2017. By popularity Nokia ranks third among mobile devices in Azerbaijan. Thus, 4.8 percent accounts for Nokia’s share on the market. Nokia's share decreased by 43.4 percent compared to late April 2016.

The mobile devices made by unknown manufacturers (mostly Chinese ones) rank fourth with a 4.12 percent share. These manufacturers are followed by Huawei - 3.48 percent, LG - 2.85 percent, Sony – 2.78 percent, Lenovo – 2.67 percent, HTC - 2.61 percent, Alcatel – 1.38 percent and.

Operating system market

Android is the most popular operating system in Azerbaijan. As of May 1, 2017, it ranks first with a 45.5 percent share on the operating system market.

As of January-April 2017, Android’s share increased by 6.3 percent on the Azerbaijani operating system market.

Android’s share increased by 23.3 percent on the Azerbaijani operating system market compared to the same period of 2016.

A Microsoft Windows market share decreased by 4.2 percent in Azerbaijan in January-April 2017.

Microsoft ranks second on the operating system market with a 38.2 percent share.

A Windows share on the Azerbaijani operating system market reduced by 16.2 percent in January-April 2017 compared to the same period of 2016.

iOS with a 9.6 percent share ranked third. iOS market share decreased by 8 percent compared to the beginning of the year.

Internet

According to Azerbaijani primary provider Delta Telecom, the volume of incoming Internet traffic in Delta Telecom’s network decreased by 5.2 percent and reached 180 gigabits in early May compared to early April.

The dynamics of the network load varies depending on the time of day and the maximum load is observed in the evening (21:00 - 00:00) - 180 gigabits. In the morning this index reduces up to 20 gigabits.

According to Delta Telecom, volume of outgoing traffic depending on the time of day ranges from 1 gigabit to 35 gigabits.

Delta Telecom’s traffic is divided among 25 telecommunications operators (state and private Internet service providers, mobile network operators and others).

As of May 3, the biggest volume of Internet traffic delivered to the end users accounted for BakinterNet state Internet provider with a 24.6 percent share. Aztelekom state Internet service provider ranked second with a 21.2 percent share, while AG Telecom with an 8.4 percent share ranked third.

The remaining 45.5 percent are distributed among such companies as Azintex, QlobalNet, Ultel, AlfaNet, AzNet, Caspel, MegaTelecom, Avirtel, Castel, Nakhchivan, Azercell, AzStarNet, Connect, Information and Computing Center (ICC) of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan, Azerin, AZUninet, DATAPlus, Smart Systems, Azeronline, Bakcell, Eurocel and TransEuroCom.

E-signature

According to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, the number of e-signatures issued by the country’s National Certification Services Center increased by 3,486 and reached 105,868 signatures as of May 1.

The country’s National Certification Services Center issued 3,486 e-signatures in April, 766 of which were issued to the state organizations, 2,612 - legal entities and 108 - physical entities.

Over 68,200 e-signatures of the total number of e-signatures were issued to the state organizations, 20,100 - legal entities and 17,400 - physical entities.

The total number of authentications and transactions carried out by using e-signatures exceeded 21.4 million.

Social networks

As of May 1, 2017, Facebook's share in the Azerbaijani social media market amounted to 75.6 percent, which is by 18.4 percent less than in the same period of 2016. By popularity Facebook ranks first in the Azerbaijani social media market.

Pinterest with a market share of 8.6 percent ranks second. The number of Pinterest users increased by threefold in January-April 2017.

By popularity Twitter social network ranks third. The number of Twitter users increased by 57.8 percent in January-April 2017. As of May 1, 2017, Twitter’s market share was 5.8 percent, which is by 38.7 percent more than as of May 1, 2016.

Instagram social network with a market share of 2.23 percent ranks fourth, followed by V Kontakte social network – 1.91 percent, Tumblr – 1.36 percent, Linkedin – 1.03 percent and others.
