Azerbaijani IT sector (January-September 2017)

Azerbaijan’s Bakcell and Azerfon mobile operators have merged their networks. Azerconnect, a joint venture established by Azerfon and Bakcell, is the regulator of the merger project. At present, Azerconnect is engaged in technical and service maintenance of the two operators’ networks. The company was considered as a structure that provides outsourcing services to mobile operators.

- The Azerbaijani State Fund for Development of Information Technologies has allocated 242,000 manat to finance 21 start-ups within the grant support for IT projects, the Azerbaijani Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ministry said. The projects were evaluated in two stages (primary and complex examination). In total, this process took 35 working days. Moreover, 172 projects were submitted during the fifth grant contest, of which 150 projects passed the initial examination and 71 projects passed the comprehensive examination. The projects aimed at developing advanced software solutions, preparing samples of IT products, developing and commercializing of innovative infrastructure and new technologies, creating of network infrastructures built on the basis of modern technologies, as well as projects aimed at expanding IT services, can apply for financial support of the State Fund.

- The Azerbaijani population has been able to pay for electricity by using SMART-cards through MilliÖN terminals, Komtec company told Trend. It is still possible to make payment by using SMART-cards in MilliÖN terminals, installed in Ganja, Ismayilli, Sumgait cities and Absheron peninsula.

"Baku Telephone Communication" LLC expanded coverage of free Wi-Fi in the park, located between Port Baku Residence and Port Baku Mall. The work has been underway to expand the coverage of wireless Internet since March within "Public Wi-Fi" project. The purpose of the project is to provide residents and guests of the capital with Internet in the places of mass congestion.

Information and communication services worth 1.26 billion manats were rendered for Azerbaijan’s population and organizations in January-September 2017, which is by 6.2 percent more than in January-September 2016.

Some 81.2 percent of revenues received through the communication sector accounted for the non-state enterprises during the reporting period.

Some 72.6 percent of the total volume of information and communication services accounted for the services rendered to the population.

Mobile communication market

Some 635.8 million manats were obtained from the mobile communication services in Azerbaijan in January-September 2017, the country’s State Statistical Committee reported.

The revenues increased by nearly 4 percent in the mobile communication sector in January-September 2017 compared to January-September 2016.

Some 50.2 percent of a total volume of obtained revenues accounted for mobile services.

Operating system market

Android is the most popular operating system in Azerbaijan. As of October 1, 2017, it ranks first with a 50.1 percent share on the operating system market, which is by 32.4 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Android’s share increased by 17 percent on the Azerbaijani operating system market in January-September 2017.

A Microsoft Windows market share decreased by 15.8 percent in Azerbaijan in January-September 2017.

Microsoft ranks second on the operating system market with a 33.5 percent share.

A Windows share on the Azerbaijani operating system market reduced by 23.5 percent in January-September 2017 compared to the same period of 2016.

iOS with a 9 percent share ranked third, followed by X operating system – 2.55 percent, less known operating systems- 1.9 percent, Series 40 operating system – 0.93 percent. iOS market share decreased by 14 percent compared to early 2017.

PC market

As of January-September 2017, the sale of notebooks and netbooks increased by 9.6 percent in Azerbaijan, the Global Stats statistical center said.

As of October 1, 2017, the market share of notebooks reached 58.7 percent in Azerbaijan, which is by 21.7 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

A 10.1 percent decrease in desktop computer sales was observed in the country as of January-September 2017.

The market share of desktop computers in Azerbaijan reached 38.2 percent as of late September 2017, which is by 20.4 percent less than in the same period of 2016.

The market share of tablet computers in Azerbaijan ranked third and reached 3.04 percent.

The market share of tablet computers decreased by 21.4 percent in Azerbaijan as of January-September 2017 and by almost 18.3 percent than in the same period of 2016.

Social networks

According to Global Stats center, Facebook users’ activity decreased by 42 percent in January-September 2017, which is a record low figure for 2017.

As of October 1, 2017, Facebook's share in the Azerbaijani social media market amounted to 51.1 percent, which is by 42.4 percent less than in the same period of 2016. By popularity Facebook ranks first in the Azerbaijani social media market.

Twitter with a market share of 18 percent ranks second. Twitter users’ activity increased by 4.8 times in January-September 2017.

By popularity YouTube social network ranks third. Twitter users’ activity increased by 30 times in January-September 2017. As of October 1, 2017, Twitter’s market share was 15.8 percent, which is by 10 times more than as of October 1, 2016.

Pinterest social network with a market share of 6.27 percent ranks fourth, followed by Instagram social network – 3 percent, V Kontakte – 1.84 percent, Tumblr – 1.43 percent and others.
